Heating the workpiece extends what spinning can do: heavier walls, harder alloys, and the ability to close a tube down into a neck.
Neck forming shapes and reduces the diameter of a tube or container while the metal is hot, which is how gas cylinders, pressure vessels, and cylinder liners get their closed ends.
